I was a linguistics major in college, partly because I was interested in it intrinsically, and partly because it let me take lots of languages and count them towards my major. I studied syntax, historical linguistics, and phonetics. I'm particularly interested in Slavic and Romance languages and Old English.

  Unicode is a 16­bit character set designed to cover the characters used in all the world's commonly­computerised languages.
• Unicode 8­Bit Transformation Form (UTF­8)
  This is a mechanism for representing 16­bit Unicode characters in a stream of 8­bit bytes, leaving US-ASCII characters alone. It's used by Plan 9, among other systems.
