Jay, Sean, and Jillian's Green Mountain Railroad trip, May 2000

In May of 2000, my friends Sean and Jillian and I took a trip on a tourist train in Vermont, the Green Mountain Raiload (about which more information is at http://www.rails-vt.com/). The company mostly does freight, but they also run this tourist train, which goes between Bellows Falls, VT, and Chester, VT. (Bellows Falls is where Jillian and her husband Paulo live when she's not away at school, and Chester is where Paulo grew up.) Most of the cars are restored 1930s-era commuter rail cars from New Jersey, but they have one car built in 1913 (which we didn't see) and one built in 1891, which we rode in. More information about the train is at http://www.rails-vt.com/GMFlyer.htm .

Jillian had worked on this train as a passenger rep the previous summer, so she knew all the staff and basically acted as tour guide. The trip lasts about 40 minutes each way, with a stopover of about 20 minutes in Chester. (Most people get off the train there, but we stayed on and used the time to wander around the train and take more pictures.)

We had a great time! In addition to being on a train car from the 1890s, we enjoyed lots of gorgeous scenery. And of course, we took lots of pictures.

Sean and I both had our digital cameras, so this page has both pictures that I took (with file names beginning with 000528), and pictures that he took (with file names beginning with v). Sean didn't take any pictures at lower than 1024x768 resolution, so I've reduced the pictures he took. In addition to the pictures taken on the train, Sean took a few in and around the Bellows Falls station at the end, and a couple at Paulo and Jillian's house.

3D pictures

One of these images is available in glorious 3D. You can view 3d-anagl.jpg with red-green 3D glasses. If you don't have 3D glasses, you can view 3d-cross.jpg by crossing your eyes or 3d-wall.jpg by defocussing your eyes (i.e., going wall-eyed). These are made by combining the slightly different views in 00052879.jpg and 00052880.jpg (and in the case of the two you don't need glasses for, shrinking and cropping the images to make it possible to fuse them).
Note: These JPEG images contain comments with descriptions and copyright information. If your browser or image viewer doesn't let you see the comments in a JPEG image, you can read them by following the ``(comments)'' link under each thumbnail.

All these pictures are Copyright (c) 2000, either by Jay Sekora or by Sean Sullivan, and no photograph may be redistributed without the explicit permission of each person depicted. The ones I took were taken with an Epson PhotoPC 750Z digital camera, and the images were acquired with Eugene Crosser's photopc program for Linux. Sean's camera is an Olympus 2020.

Tanker cars seen from the window of our train. This 3D picture should be viewed through red-green 3D glasses, with red over the left eye. The 3D effect isn't quite as pronounced as it ought to be, because I didn't get the angles quite right.

I made this picture with xv and pnmarith by taking only the red component of the left-eye picture and only the red and green components of the right-eye picture and combining them.

(I've got loads of 3D glasses; let me know if you need a pair.)

To view this picture, cross your eyes until the two images of the sign near the middle of the picture overlap. If you have trouble, you might try the wall-eyed version or (if you have red-green 3D glasses) the anaglyph version.

To view this picture, spread your eyes as if focussing on something in the far distance until the two images of the sign near the middle of the picture overlap. If you have trouble, you might try the wall-eyed version or (if you have red-green 3D glasses) the anaglyph version. I can't see wall-eyed 3D pictures at all, so in my humble opinion, the cross-eyed version is easier.
