Our new dog Kodi, early October 1999

On 2 October 1999, my household brought home a gorgeous, independent, sweet-tempered 2½-year-old male Shiba Inu. He had been in the care of the Buddy Dog Humane Society (http://www.buddydoghs.com/). He came to us with the name Kojak, but faced with the prospect of shaving his head and sticking lollipops in his mouth, Tigris decided to modify that to Kodiak, which we quickly shortened to Kodi.

As is evidently common with Shiba Inus, he has a very catlike, independent personality. He's quite able to entertain himself, and while he enjoys affection and snuggles up to us (especially when he's tired), he's more aloof than most dogs are, and loves to go exploring, paying as little attention as possible to the fact that there's somebody on the other end of the leash. He loves being outside, and he loves going for car rides. He's very alert, but calm and quiet - a very sweet-tempered, intelligent dog.

He has a pin in his left hind leg (and visible scars and a fused joint) from being hit by a car before he came to the shelter, so he walks with a limp. He seems healthy and happy though - perhaps `content' is a better word, since he's so calm. His coat is gorgeous, and his triangular face lends him a bit of a foxlike appearance. He's a sweetie.

Our new dog Kodi, in what he seems to have decided is his favourite spot in our living room. This picture was taken just a couple of hours after we got him home from the shelter. Kodi is a good dog.
