SSH access to aq.org
This page provides secure access to accounts on
aq.org using the
SSH protocol, via the GPL'ed applet provided at
http://javassh.org/. You can only use this page if you already have an
aq.org account. I believe that most of the code is by Matthias
L. Jungel and Marcus Meißner, and the SSH protocol implementation
is by Cédric Gourio; apologies if I have any attributions
wrong.
See below for SSH-related links.
NOTE: As of March 2009, this applet does not work; I'll be finding a replacement for it as soon as I can.
I used to have a page with an applet that did basically the same
thing this applet does called
MindTerm, from
Mindbright Technology in Sweden (although they've since changed their name). That
applet was free-as-in-beer for noncommercial use, but stopped
working recently, so I've replaced it with this one which is free-as-in-speech
(meaning GPLed).
In order to use this applet, you need to be using a Java-capable
web browser and have Java turned on. (Note: There have been some
security bugs in the Java implementations of some browser versions,
so you might not want to leave Java turned on all the time. In
particular, versions of Netscape prior to 4.75 have security vulnerabilities.)
An alternative if you're on a Windows platform is the
PuTTY application, an excellent SSH and telnet client by
Simon Tatham. It also comes with
pscp.exe, which allows you to copy files using the SSH protocol (which
this applet doesn't let you do).
There are lots of other SSH implementations, and you can find
pointers to some of them at
www.ssh.org. Now that the RSAREF patent (on a particular encryption algorithm)
is history, most of them are actually legal to use even in the
US! :-)
